Three Friends Receive Ron Blake Award
Three long-standing members of the Friends have received the 2009 Ron Blake Award given to outstanding volunteers in Anne Arundel County
Gerry Lyons
For more than eighteen years Gerry Lyons has volunteered at Quiet Waters Park. She has served as a board member of The Friends of Quiet Waters Park, the Art Committee for over sixteen years, and has served on countless other committees and assignments. This necessitated attending hundreds of planning and organizational meetings in support of park programs. Gerry has volunteered almost every year to help with our Summer Concert series attending most every concert. At each concert she has helped set up The Friends of Quiet Waters Park table, collect money for sales, and assist the public by answering questions about the park. Her efforts with fundraising have enabled The Friends of QWP to sponsor many of the park programs which would not otherwise be offered. She has helped organize well over 100 artist receptions in the Visitor Center by helping with the setup, serving, and cleanup of the food. She has been instrumental in organizing our annual Arts and Music Festival which is recognized as one of the best in Maryland.
Gerry has helped the staff at QWP with numerous projects and special events. The best thing about Gerry Lyons is that she volunteers for almost every project at the park without complaint and always with a smile. She never complains about the task she has been given or the lack of help needed to do the job. On several occasions she was the only volunteer at an event.
Gerry Lyons has been a shinning example to other park volunteers and an inspiration to all of the staff at the park. Her friendly smile and quiet but persistent efforts has made our park better for our staff and park patrons.
Gerry enjoys walking in the park and lives with her husband, Clay, on the Annapolis Neck Peninsula.
Phyllis Saroff
Phyllis started going to Quiet Waters Park as soon as it opened, approximately twenty years ago. She loved the expanse of wild land so close to her home in Hillsmere and describes it as “an island of green in a sea of cars and concrete”. She also loved the more civilized activities like the concerts and festivals. The ice rink was a special aspect that Phyllis enjoyed with her own children and other neighborhood kids. She became involved with The Friends of Quiet Waters Park in an effort to re-establish skating after the rink was closed. She could not bear the notion that the facility tax payers bought would lie idle and go to waste, and felt an outdoor activity such as skating in the winter was an important aspect to the quality of life in this area. With the oversight and help of The Friends of Quiet Waters Park, she organized letter writing in the surrounding communities to our county executives, and spoke at county council hearings.
Together with Heather East she helped organize fundraisers. These events were helpful in informing the community, and she is glad that joined Heather in this effort. Over $20,000 was raised from these efforts and a new sound system and skate sharpener were purchased for the rink. Now when she walks by the rink, she is happy to see people skating again. She is especially pleased to see them “out of their cars and houses, far from their various electronic boxes, and with each other in a little island of natural space.”
Phyllis Saroff is a fine artist who is represented by McBride Gallery in Annapolis, a freelance illustrator for over 20 years, wife, and mother of two teenage boys.
Heather East
Since Moving to Annapolis from Boston nearly ten years ago, Heather has been running, biking, and hiking the trails at Quiet Waters Park with her son Nicholas in tow. Heather is passionate about the park, art, nature, and the environment.
As Vice President of the Friends of Quiet Waters Park, Heather’s mission is to give back to the park what pleasure she derives by contributing positively to The Friends of Quiet Waters Park and to make choices which are friendly to the environment. Heather along with Phyllis Saroff spearheaded the Save the Rink campaign to get back what they saw as an important outdoor recreational venue for family fun in the winter months. Heather organized Ice Savours, a formal fundraising event with music, food from local restaurants, and a silent auction at the Blue Heron Center and an Ice Rink Benefit at the Naval Academy’s Dahlgren Hall.
Heather East is the founder of the Annapolis Biscotti Company, Inc. and Consultant to Shows, Inc. She is an avid runner, kayaker, and triathelete.
